About TopTool and how we review

TopTool is a directory of software and the alternatives to it, AI-powered and not, from productivity and development to design, video and games. It is built for people choosing an app, so every listing tries to answer one question plainly: is this the right one for me, and what else could I use instead?

Every listing is checked by a person

Before anything is published, an editor opens the product’s website and checks that it works, that the description is accurate, and that the people behind it are identifiable. An automated pre-screen helps the editor spot problems, but it can only advise: a person makes every decision.

What the notes mean

• Good for / Watch out for / Pricing notes summarise the product’s own public information, in our words, and carry the date of the last review. We do not give scores, and we only say we tested something when we did.
• Unclaimed means our editors wrote the listing and the maker has not verified it yet. Makers can claim it, or ask us to correct or remove it.
• Verified owner means the maker proved they control the product’s website.
• Products made by the team behind TopTool say so at the bottom of their page. They follow exactly the same rules and ranking as every other listing.

How tools are ordered

Search results are ordered by relevance to your search. Without a search, we order by how complete and recent each review is, with a daily rotation so the same tools are not always first. Payment, badges and who made the product never change the order.
