About Jellyfin
Jellyfin is a volunteer-built, free-software media system licensed under the GNU GPL. You run the Jellyfin server on your own hardware to collect, manage and stream movies, shows, music, live TV and DVR recordings, books, comics and photos, and SyncPlay lets people watch together remotely. The project does not run servers for users and states it has no tracking or phone-home. Official clients include a web interface, Jellyfin Media Player for desktop, Android, iOS/iPadOS, Android TV and Fire TV, Roku, webOS, Samsung Tizen, Xbox and a Kodi add-on (JellyCon), with third-party clients for other platforms.
Good for
Self-hosters who want a fully free media server with no account system, fees or tracking, and are comfortable running their own hardware.
Watch out for
You host and maintain everything yourself, including remote access. The Roku store listing may say a cable subscription is required; Jellyfin says none is.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 the server and official clients are free with no paid tier; the project is funded by donations.
