About Audacity
Audacity is a cross-platform audio editor and recorder maintained by Muse Group and contributors. It records and edits multitrack audio, imports and exports common formats (WAV, MP3, FLAC, Ogg and others, with FFmpeg for more), and supports VST3, Nyquist and other plugins plus spectrogram and Vamp analysis. Audacity 4 brings an updated interface and workspaces. Optional OpenVINO AI plugins add music separation, noise suppression, transcription and generation. Audio.com is the companion service for cloud backup and sharing.
Good for
Anyone who needs a no-cost recorder and editor for voice, podcasts or music cleanup, including users on Linux.
Watch out for
The default download links install via MuseHub, Muse Group's distribution app; a 'Download without MuseHub' option is offered. AI features come from separately installed plugins, not the core app. Cloud saving goes through Audio.com, a separate account.
Pricing notes
The editor itself is free and open source. The homepage promotes paid third-party plugins sold through MuseHub; these are optional.
