About Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Excel is Microsoft's spreadsheet application for organising data, building formulas, analysing tables and creating charts. It is available as desktop apps for Windows and Mac, on the web and on iOS and Android, and is included in Microsoft 365 subscriptions alongside Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. With a qualifying subscription, Copilot can summarise data, highlight trends, generate charts and tables from prompts and suggest budgeting and forecasting steps. Files can be shared and co-edited through OneDrive. A free web version and free mobile editing on small screens are available with a Microsoft account.
Good for
Businesses, finance and operations teams, students and anyone who needs the spreadsheet format most other organisations exchange, with desktop power features.
Watch out for
Full desktop apps and Copilot require a paid Microsoft 365 plan; Microsoft 365 Basic has no AI features. Free web use requires saving files in OneDrive. On mobile, free editing is limited to screens smaller than 10.1 inches.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 Microsoft lists Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99/month or $99.99/year, Family (up to 6 people) at $12.99/month or $129.99/year and Premium at $19.99/month or $199.99/year, each with a one-month free trial. The web version is free with a Microsoft account.
