About Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word is Microsoft's word processor for writing, formatting and reviewing documents such as reports, proposals, CVs and letters. It runs as desktop apps on Windows and Mac, on the web and on iOS and Android, and is part of Microsoft 365 with Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. It supports rich formatting, templates, real-time co-authoring with presence indicators, comments and sharing through OneDrive. With a Microsoft 365 subscription, Copilot can draft, summarise, refine and reformat text. A free web version is available with a Microsoft account.
Good for
Anyone who exchanges .docx files with businesses, schools or publishers, and teams that need tracked review and co-authoring.
Watch out for
Desktop apps and Copilot need a paid Microsoft 365 plan; Basic has no AI features. Free web use requires files stored in OneDrive. Mobile subscriptions bought in-app renew through the App Store.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 Microsoft lists Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99/month or $99.99/year, Family (up to 6 people) at $12.99/month or $129.99/year and Premium at $19.99/month or $199.99/year, each with a one-month free trial. The web version is free with a Microsoft account.
