About Plex
Plex lets you run Plex Media Server on your own computer or NAS to organise movies, TV, music and photos with artwork and metadata, then stream them to Plex apps on other devices. Streaming personal media on your home network is free. Remote Watch Pass adds remote streaming of personal media, and Plex Pass adds features such as hardware-accelerated transcoding, downloads, skip intro and credits, DVR recording of over-the-air TV with a tuner, Plex Home managed accounts, the Plex Dash server-monitoring app and premium Plexamp music features. Separately, Plex offers free ad-supported on-demand titles and live TV channels, plus movie rentals in select countries.
Good for
People with their own media library who want a polished server and client apps for many devices, plus optional free streaming channels.
Watch out for
Remote streaming of personal video is not free: it requires Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass. You must run and maintain your own server for personal media.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 the plans page did not load prices (it showed 'Could not load pricing'). It shows Remote Watch Pass with a 14-day free trial and Plex Pass as a separate subscription; the local-network server and app are free.
