About Ableton Live

Ableton Live is a digital audio workstation from Ableton for composing, recording, producing and performing music. Its Session View lets you launch and combine audio and MIDI clips without a timeline, while the Arrangement View is a conventional timeline for recording takes and building finished tracks. Live 12 adds MIDI Transformations and Generators, Keys and Scales tools, support for non-12-tone tuning systems, and new devices such as the Meld MPE synth. It records hardware and plugins, converts audio to MIDI, and warps audio to any tempo. Max for Live (in Suite) lets users build and run custom devices. It comes in Intro, Standard and Suite editions and runs on Windows and macOS.

Good for

Electronic producers, beatmakers and live performers who want to improvise with loops and clips, and anyone who wants a DAW that works the same on Windows and Mac.

Watch out for

Intro is limited to 16 tracks and fewer instruments and effects; Max for Live is only in Suite. A licence covers one user on up to two computers. Rent-to-own is only offered for Suite.

Pricing notes

As of October 2026 the shop lists Live 12 Intro at USD 99, Standard at USD 349 and Suite at USD 749 as one-time purchases, or Suite via rent-to-own at USD 31.21/month for 24 months. A 30-day free trial of Suite includes saving and exporting.
