About Alfred
Alfred, made by the independent UK company Running with Crayons Ltd, is a launcher and productivity app for macOS. From a hotkey you can launch apps, find and preview files, search the web with custom keywords, do calculations, look up spellings and definitions and run system commands. The paid Powerpack adds clipboard history, text snippets with auto-expansion, a file navigator with actions, contacts viewer, Music.app control, themes, 1Password bookmarks, terminal commands, settings sync and Workflows: no-code automations that chain hotkeys, keywords and actions, with thousands shared by the community. Alfred Remote turns an iPhone or iPad into a control panel for the Mac. Alfred 6 is announced for this autumn.
Good for
Mac users who want to keep their hands on the keyboard and automate repetitive tasks with workflows, without a subscription.
Watch out for
Clipboard history, snippets and workflows all need the paid Powerpack. Mac only. Alfred 6 is announced; the shop says buying now includes a free upgrade to it.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 the shop lists the Alfred 5 Powerpack at £34 for a single licence or £59 for the Mega Supporter licence with free lifetime upgrades, both one-time; buyers now get a free upgrade to Alfred 6. The core app is free.
