About WinRAR

WinRAR, published by win.rar GmbH in Berlin and written by Alexander Roshal, is a compression and archiving tool for Windows. It creates RAR and ZIP archives, opens and extracts all popular archive formats, and supports encryption and splitting archives for backup and transfer. It works on Windows 10 and 11, is available in 40+ languages and supports Unicode file names; RAR command-line versions exist for other operating systems. It is distributed as try before you buy: per the EULA anyone may use it for a test period of up to 40 days, after which a licence must be purchased. Licences are per computer, with home users allowed to use one licence across their own computers.

Good for

Windows users who work with RAR archives, need to create RAR files, split archives, or want a long-established archiver with shell integration.

Watch out for

Business users need one licence per computer. The unlicensed trial can show a registration reminder that may load a web page. Download only from the official site; the EULA forbids bundled installers.

Pricing notes

As of October 2026 the EULA describes a 40-day trial then a paid licence. The online shop was behind a bot check, so current prices were not read.
