About Kdenlive
Kdenlive (KDE Non-Linear Video Editor) is a free, open-source video editor developed by a small, mostly volunteer team within the KDE community. It supports multitrack non-linear editing with multicam and three-point editing, nested sequences, markers and automatic backups. Media can be organised in multiple bins with tags and filters, with proxy clips for smooth playback on slower machines. It includes hundreds of keyframeable audio and video effects and transitions, audio mixers and voiceover recording, colour tools with LUTs and scopes (histogram, vectorscope, RGB parade, waveform), subtitle creation with automatic transcription, title clips, and a link to Glaxnimate for motion graphics.
Good for
Linux users and anyone who wants a full-featured free editor with multicam, proxies, scopes and subtitles, and who is happy to rely on community documentation.
Watch out for
As a volunteer-run project, support is through the user manual and forum rather than a vendor. BSD is also supported per the homepage, but is not a platform TopTool lists.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 Kdenlive is free to download and use; the project accepts donations.
