About Kodi
Kodi is a free and open-source media player and entertainment hub, run as a non-profit project by the XBMC Foundation and developed by volunteers since 2003. It plays most audio and video formats from local storage, network shares or the internet, scans media to build a library with covers, descriptions and fan art, and offers playlists, slideshows, visualisations and a skinning engine designed for use from the couch with a remote. Functionality can be extended through add-ons. Native builds are available for Android, Linux, BSD, macOS, iOS, tvOS and Windows. The code is licensed under GPLv2.
Good for
Home theatre PC and TV-box setups where you want a remote-friendly, skinnable interface over a local or network media library.
Watch out for
Third-party add-ons vary widely in quality and legality; only install from trusted repositories. Setup takes more effort than a hosted streaming app.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 Kodi is free under GPLv2, with no paid tier.
