About LMMS
LMMS is a community-driven, open-source digital audio workstation for composing music on Windows, macOS and Linux. It provides a Song Editor for arranging, a Beat+Bassline Editor for patterns, a Piano Roll for notes and chords, and track-based automation. It bundles 16 built-in synthesizers, including emulations of classic chips and synths, plus the embedded ZynAddSubFX synth, SoundFont and VST instrument support, and a set of effects, presets and samples. It imports MIDI and Hydrogen project files and can be played with a MIDI or computer keyboard. Development is hosted on GitHub.
Good for
Beginners, students and hobbyists who want a no-cost, pattern-based beat-making tool, especially on Linux or older computers.
Watch out for
The current stable release (1.2.2) dates from 2020; newer 1.3.0 builds are labelled alpha. macOS users on 10.14 or later must pick the matching build.
Pricing notes
Free to download and use; there is no paid edition.
