About OpenToonz
OpenToonz is an open-source 2D animation production package based on Toonz from Digital Video S.p.A. in Italy, customized for years by Studio Ghibli, and released as an open project by Dwango. It supports raster and vector drawing, ink and paint, colour design and digital compositing, along with GTS, a scanning tool developed at Studio Ghibli for scanning numbered animation drawings (Windows only). An effects SDK lets developers add plug-in effects, including style-transfer effects from Dwango's machine-learning team. Its source code is under the New BSD License and it can be used free of charge for commercial and non-commercial work.
Good for
Anime-style animators, students and small studios who want a free production pipeline covering drawing, scanning, ink and paint and compositing.
Watch out for
The official site lists system requirements for Windows and macOS only, and some manuals are only in Japanese. The interface and workflow follow studio production conventions, which takes time to learn.
Pricing notes
Free for commercial and non-commercial use; no paid tier.
