About Total Commander

Total Commander, by Christian Ghisler (Ghisler Software GmbH, Switzerland), is a long-running file manager for Windows, from Windows 3.1 through 11, in 32- and 64-bit versions. It shows two file windows side by side with tabs, and adds an enhanced search, file comparison and directory synchronisation, a Quick View panel for images and video, thumbnails and custom columns, a multi-rename tool and regular expressions. It handles ZIP, 7Z, RAR, TAR, GZ, CAB and other archives, has a built-in FTP client with FTPS, and supports plugins. Mobile versions are free. The Windows version is shareware that can be tested for 30 days before purchase.

Good for

Keyboard-oriented Windows users who manage many files and want two-pane copying, synchronisation, batch renaming and FTP in one tool.

Watch out for

After 30 days you must buy a licence or uninstall. The interface follows the classic two-pane style and takes time to learn.

Pricing notes

As of October 2026 the order page lists EUR 42 plus VAT (e.g. EUR 49.98 in Germany) for a licence key, EUR 31.50 plus VAT for students, with future updates free; US tax depends on the state. Mobile versions are free.
