About Adobe Photoshop
Photoshop is Adobe's layer-based image editor, sold as part of Creative Cloud. It covers photo retouching, compositing, selections and masking, text and colour work, and non-destructive adjustment layers. Recent versions add generative tools built on Adobe's Firefly models, including Generative Fill, Generative Expand and the Remove Tool, plus Harmonize for matching the lighting and colour of objects placed into a scene, and partner upscaling models from Topaz Labs. A Photoshop plan covers the desktop app, a web version and the iPhone and iPad apps, and includes Adobe Express Premium. A free mobile app exists with premium features behind the subscription.
Good for
Photographers, retouchers and designers who need detailed pixel editing, compositing and masking, and who exchange PSD files with clients or studios that already work in Adobe's ecosystem.
Watch out for
Subscription only: the free trial page says billing starts after seven days unless cancelled, and the FAQ asks for billing information when creating the trial account. Adobe says there is no free version of Photoshop on the web. Generative features draw on a monthly allowance of generative credits.
