About Anki
Anki is a flashcard program that schedules reviews with spaced repetition: after each card you rate your recall and Anki shows it again just before you are likely to forget it. Cards can hold text, audio, images, video and scientific markup, layouts and review timing are customisable, and collections of 100,000+ cards are supported. The free desktop app runs on Windows, macOS and Linux; the free AnkiWeb service syncs cards between devices. Users can install add-ons and download shared decks. AnkiMobile is the official iOS app (paid, funding development), while AnkiDroid for Android is free and built by contributors. The source is licensed under the AGPL v3.
Good for
Long-term memorisation of large amounts of material (medicine, law, vocabulary) by learners willing to make or import their own decks and tune the scheduler.
Watch out for
Getting started is easy but the many options and card templates take time to learn. The iOS app is a paid purchase, and AnkiDroid is a separate community project.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 the desktop app, AnkiWeb sync and AnkiDroid are free. AnkiMobile for iPhone/iPad is a one-time $24.99 on the US App Store.
