About Duolingo
Duolingo is a learning app from Duolingo, Inc. that teaches 40+ languages through short, game-like lessons covering speaking, reading, listening and writing. Alongside languages it now offers Math, Music (using an on-screen keyboard, no instrument needed) and Chess courses. Learners earn rewards, keep streaks and compete on leaderboards. Per its store listings every language course is free with ads; the Super Duolingo subscription removes ads and adds perks such as unlimited hearts/energy and monthly streak repair, and Duolingo Max adds AI-powered Video Call and Roleplay conversation practice with feedback. It runs on the web and as iOS and Android apps.
Good for
Building a daily habit in a new language with short sessions, beginners who want a free start, and families who also want light math, music or chess practice in the same app.
Watch out for
The free tier shows ads and limits mistakes via hearts/energy. AI conversation features (Video Call, Roleplay) are only in the Max tier. The website is rendered in the browser, so plan details were taken from the official app-store listings.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 the US App Store lists Super Duolingo in-app purchases between $83.99 and $119.99 (the listing does not say which billing period each covers) and a 14-day free trial of Super. Max pricing was not shown.
