About Babbel
Babbel, from Babbel GmbH in Berlin, teaches 14 languages (Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, English, Russian, Polish, Turkish, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Dutch and Indonesian) with courses written by a team of 200+ language experts and adapted to the learner's native language. Lessons are around 10 minutes and mix grammar in context, listening, writing and speech-recognition pronunciation practice. Guided Conversations and Babbel Speak (an AI conversation partner, in beta) give speaking practice with feedback, and a review system resurfaces vocabulary. Babbel also publishes videos, podcasts and a magazine, supports offline lesson downloads and offers a group plan for sharing.
Good for
Structured, grammar-aware courses for learners of the main European languages who want lessons explained in their own language and want to practise speaking.
Watch out for
Only a free first lesson is available; a subscription is needed for full courses. The language list (14) is shorter than many free apps. Babbel Speak is labelled beta.
