About Codeberg
Codeberg is a free Git hosting service run by Codeberg e.V., a non-profit association based in Germany, for free and open-source software and free content. It runs on Forgejo, a free-software Git forge, and offers repositories, issue tracking, pull requests, wikis, releases, organisations, Codeberg Pages for static websites, CI through Woodpecker and Forgejo Actions, and translation through Codeberg Translate (Weblate). Most services run on the association's own hardware in Berlin. It is funded by donations and membership fees, and membership is optional. Projects are expected to use a free licence, and private repositories are only tolerated in small amounts for contributors to free software.
Good for
Open-source maintainers who want a non-commercial, community-governed home for their code outside the large commercial platforms.
Watch out for
Codeberg is meant for free and open-source work: it does not offer private hosting for commercial projects, and private content is limited to about 100 MB for contributors to free software. Funding is much smaller than commercial platforms.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 Codeberg is free to use; the FAQ asks users to consider donating or joining Codeberg e.V. Companies needing private repositories are pointed to self-hosting Forgejo.
