About Zed
Zed is a code editor from Zed Industries, a team that includes the creators of Atom and Tree-sitter. It is written in Rust on its own GPU-accelerated UI framework (GPUI) and focuses on speed and real-time multiplayer collaboration. AI features are optional: users can bring their own API keys from many providers, connect external agents such as Claude Agent or Codex through the Agent Client Protocol, or pay for Zed-hosted models and edit predictions; all AI can be turned off. Zed runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, and its source is licensed mainly under GPL-3.0-or-later with some Apache-2.0 parts. The company also builds Delta, a separate multiplayer environment for coding with agents.
Good for
Developers who want a fast, native editor with built-in collaboration, and who prefer to choose their own AI provider or none at all.
Watch out for
There is no web version yet. Business has no free trial, and SSO, SAML and SCIM are listed as planned but not available.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 the Personal plan is free forever, with unlimited use through your own keys or external agents. Pro is $10/month with unlimited edit predictions and $5 of hosted-model tokens, then usage billing at API list price +10%; Business is $30 per seat/month. A 14-day Pro trial needs no card.
