About Discord
Discord lets people create servers and group chats with text channels, drop-in voice channels and video calls, so they can join and leave without placing a call. Members can stream games or their screen at low latency, watch videos, play built-in activities, and use custom emoji, stickers and soundboard effects. For supported games it shows what friends are playing and lets them join. It runs on desktop, in the browser, on phones and on PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Developers can build apps and activities on its platform. The optional Nitro subscription adds bigger uploads, custom profiles, HD streaming and other perks.
Good for
Gaming groups, friend circles, creators and hobby communities who want always-on voice channels alongside text chat, with screen and game streaming.
Watch out for
Discord is built for communities and social use, not as a managed workplace tool, so business admin and compliance controls should not be assumed. Some perks, such as larger uploads and HD streaming, need Nitro.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 the Nitro page lists Nitro Basic at $2.99/month (custom emoji anywhere, 50MB uploads) and Nitro at $9.99/month (1 GB uploads, HD streaming, custom profiles and more). Core chat, voice and video are free.
