About Thunderbird

Thunderbird is a desktop email client that also handles calendars and contacts. It manages several accounts separately or in a unified inbox, with filters, tags and a customisable interface, and it can be extended with add-ons. Thunderbird Mobile brings an open-source email app to Android (Google Play and F-Droid). Thunderbird is made by MZLA Technologies Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of the not-for-profit Mozilla.org, and is funded by user donations; it says it does not collect personal data, show ads in the inbox or train AI on your mail. The project is also launching Thundermail, a hosted email service.

Good for

People who want one desktop app for several email accounts and calendars, with no ads and a strong privacy stance, including on Linux.

Watch out for

Thunderbird is a client: you still need an email provider (or the new Thundermail service). No iOS app was listed on the pages read. Donation requests appear on the download pages.

Pricing notes

As of October 2026 the desktop and Android apps are free ('free forever', with optional donations). Thundermail pricing was not checked.
