About edX
edX, founded by Harvard and MIT, offers online courses and programmes from universities and institutions such as Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Oxford and Georgia Tech. The catalogue spans single courses, Professional Certificates, XSeries, MicroBachelors and MicroMasters programmes, executive education, boot camps and full bachelor's and master's degrees, in subjects such as AI, computer science, data science, business and healthcare. Many courses can be taken free with limited access to content; buying a verified certificate adds graded assignments, unlimited access to course material and a shareable credential. edX also sells enterprise subscriptions for employers.
Good for
Learners who want university-level courses, potential academic credit, or a stepping stone into a degree from a named institution.
Watch out for
Free access is limited: graded work, full content access and certificates require paying for the verified track. Prices vary by course and programme, and executive education and degrees cost far more.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 the site does not publish a single price; verified certificates and programmes are priced per course. The homepage showed a time-limited promo code offer.
