About GIMP
GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a community-developed image editor released under the GNU General Public License. It handles photo retouching and restoration, compositing, original artwork and interface graphics, with colour management for print and screen work. It can be extended with plug-ins and scripts written in languages such as Python and Scheme, and is used alongside other free tools like Inkscape and Scribus. The current release line is GIMP 3.2, and it runs on GNU/Linux, macOS, Windows and other systems.
Good for
People who want a capable layer-based image editor without a subscription, Linux users, and anyone who wants to script or extend their editor.
Watch out for
Its interface and tool names differ from Photoshop's, so there is a learning curve for people switching. Support is through community documentation, forums and tutorials rather than a vendor help desk.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 GIMP is free to download and use; the project accepts donations.
