About GitHub
GitHub is a platform for hosting Git repositories and collaborating on code. It offers public and private repositories, pull requests with code review, Issues and Projects for planning, GitHub Actions for CI/CD, Packages, Pages and wikis, Dependabot updates and security features such as secret protection and code scanning. Codespaces provides cloud development environments, and GitHub Copilot adds AI coding assistance and agents. It is used through the website, the command line, GitHub Desktop for Windows and macOS, and GitHub Mobile. Enterprise plans add data residency, managed users, SAML SSO, audit logs and a self-hosted Enterprise Server option.
Good for
Open-source projects and software teams of any size that want code hosting, review, CI and project tracking in one widely used place.
Watch out for
Free includes 2,000 CI/CD minutes and 500 MB of Packages storage per month for private work; Codespaces compute and storage, Git LFS and Copilot beyond the free tier are billed separately.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 the pricing page lists Free at $0, Team at $4 per user/month and Enterprise from $21 per user/month, both marked 'for the first 12 months' with a footnote. Codespaces starts at $0.18 per hour of compute; Git LFS is $5/month for 50 GB.
