About Insomnia
Insomnia is an open-source API client and design tool from Kong. It sends REST, GraphQL, gRPC, SOAP, WebSocket, Socket.IO and Server-Sent Events requests, and supports OpenAPI-based design, mock servers, pre-request and after-response scripting, environments, a collection runner and custom linting rules. It includes a native MCP client for testing MCP servers and some AI-assisted features. Projects can be stored locally, in a Git repository or in Kong's cloud with optional end-to-end encryption, and a local-only Scratch Pad works without any login. The Inso CLI supports CI/CD automation, and Enterprise plans integrate with Kong Konnect. Desktop apps run on macOS, Windows and Linux. The code is Apache-2.0 licensed.
Good for
Developers who want a capable multi-protocol API client that can keep data local or in Git, and organisations already using Kong.
Watch out for
On the free Essentials plan, Git Sync projects are limited to 3 users and mock servers to 1,000 requests a month. SSO, SCIM and storage policies require Enterprise.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 the pricing page lists Essentials at $0, Pro at $12 per user/month and Enterprise at $45 per user/month (self-serve up to 50 users). Annual billing is said to save 17%; it is unclear which period the shown prices use. Enterprise has a 14-day trial.
