About IntelliJ IDEA

IntelliJ IDEA is an integrated development environment from JetBrains focused on Java and Kotlin. It understands the whole project for code navigation, refactorings, inspections and debugging, and includes support for Spring developed with the Spring team, plus built-in tools for databases, API testing and profiling. AI features include code completion and generation, a chat, and the ability to run agents inside the IDE, including JetBrains' own Junie and third-party agents such as Claude Agent, Codex, Gemini CLI and GitHub Copilot through an agent registry. The IDE runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. A free version is available with 30 days of the paid Ultimate features included.

Good for

Java, Kotlin and Spring developers working on large codebases who rely on accurate refactoring, inspections and an integrated debugger.

Watch out for

Many advanced features need the paid Ultimate subscription after the 30-day period, and business licences cost much more than personal ones. JetBrains AI plans are sold separately from the IDE.

Pricing notes

As of October 2026 the store data lists IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate for individuals at $199 for the first year, $159 the second and $119 from the third (or $19.90/month), and for organisations at $719/year or $71.90/month per user. JetBrains AI Pro is $100/year and AI Ultimate $300/year.
