About Joplin

Joplin is an open-source note-taking and to-do app created by Laurent Cozic. Notes can hold images, videos, PDFs and audio, plus math expressions and diagrams, and can be edited in a Rich Text or Markdown editor. Notes sync across devices through Joplin Cloud or third-party services such as Dropbox and OneDrive, with optional end-to-end encryption. A web clipper for Chrome and Firefox saves pages or screenshots as notes, and plugins, themes and an extension API let users customise it. Apps are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, plus a terminal app. The paid Joplin Cloud service, based in France, adds sharing, collaboration, publishing notes to the web and a web app.

Good for

Privacy-minded users who want a free, open-source Evernote-style app with encrypted sync and the freedom to choose where notes are stored.

Watch out for

Sharing, collaboration, publishing and the web app depend on the paid Joplin Cloud service or a self-hosted Joplin Server. Joplin Cloud prices are in euros.

As of October 2026 the app is free and open source.
