About Krita
Krita is a free and open-source digital painting application licensed under the GNU GPL and developed by its contributor community. It offers over 100 preloaded brushes across more than nine brush engines, brush stabilizers, drawing assistants, layers, a wrap-around mode for seamless textures and frame-by-frame animation tools. For comics, it includes vector tools with a library of word balloon shapes, a text tool and page templates. Installers are provided for Windows, macOS and Linux, with Android builds on Google Play; paid store versions on Steam, Epic, Microsoft Store and the Mac App Store fund development.
Good for
Illustrators and comic artists who want a full painting program with no subscription or trial limits, and Linux users who need a native option.
Watch out for
iPad and iPhone are not supported, per the download page. Comic-specific features such as multi-page management and lettering are lighter than in dedicated comic software.
Pricing notes
Free to download from krita.org. Optional paid versions on Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and the Mac App Store provide automatic updates and support development; donations are also accepted.
