About Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams is Microsoft's collaboration app for chat, meetings, calls and shared work on files. Per Microsoft's admin documentation, each team is backed by a Microsoft 365 group, a SharePoint site and document library for files, an Exchange Online shared mailbox and calendar, and a OneNote notebook, and it ties into apps such as Planner and Power BI. Guests and external users can be included, third-party apps can be added, and admins manage it through the Teams admin center. Microsoft positions Teams for informal chat and quick iteration, with Outlook for more formal email. Clients are available for Windows, macOS, the web and iOS/Android.
Good for
Organisations already on Microsoft 365 that want chat, meetings and file collaboration tied to SharePoint, OneDrive and Outlook.
Watch out for
Microsoft's documentation says Teams is no longer supported on Linux; Linux users are pointed to the web app in Edge, Chrome, Firefox or Safari. Features and licensing depend on the Microsoft 365 plan, so check which plan includes what you need.
