About Neovim
Neovim is a community-maintained, open-source text editor that continues and extends Vim while staying compatible with Vim's editing model and Vimscript. Configuration and plugins can be written in Lua, and a versioned, documented API with RPC lets extensions be written in any language and lets GUIs, IDEs and browsers embed Neovim. It ships with a built-in LSP client for code inspection and refactoring, Tree-sitter parsing for syntax highlighting and text objects, multicursor, a built-in terminal and session multiplexing. Pre-built packages are available for Windows, macOS and Linux, and it is in many package managers. New contributions are licensed under Apache 2.0, with code from Vim under the Vim licence.
Good for
Keyboard-driven developers and Vim users who want a highly customisable terminal editor that they can script in Lua.
Watch out for
Modal editing has a steep learning curve, and turning Neovim into a full IDE means assembling and maintaining your own plugin setup; the project lists 'turn Vim into an IDE' as a non-goal.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 Neovim is free and open source; the project is funded through sponsors and a merch store.
