About OpenShot
OpenShot is a free, open-source video editor created in 2008 and released under the GNU GPL version 3 or later. It aims to be easy to learn while offering unlimited tracks, trimming and snapping with waveforms, frame-accurate controls, keyframe animation of position, scale, rotation, opacity, volume and effect settings, more than 400 transitions, effects such as chroma key and lens flare, interactive video masks, audio visualisations, and colour grading with wheels, curves, LUTs and scopes. Version 4.0 added recording of screen, webcam, microphone and system audio directly into a project. Media is read through FFmpeg, and project files move between Linux, macOS and Windows. A separate OpenShot Cloud API is offered for developers.
Good for
Beginners, students and home users who want a simple, watermark-free editor on any desktop OS, and Linux users who want something lighter than a pro suite.
Watch out for
It covers the essentials well but lacks the depth of professional editors for large or complex projects. The OpenShot Cloud API is a separate product and was not reviewed here.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 OpenShot is free to download and use with no subscriptions, watermarks or project limits, per the homepage; donations are accepted.
