About Penpot
Penpot is a browser-based design and prototyping tool for product teams. It supports responsive layouts built on CSS Grid and Flexbox, interactive prototypes, components, shared libraries and native design tokens, and exposes design data through open standards (CSS, HTML, SVG, JSON) and an open file format. It has a plugin system, an API and an MCP server so AI agents can read and edit designs. Penpot can be used on the hosted cloud or self-hosted on private, on-premise or air-gapped infrastructure, for example with Docker. It is developed by Kaleidos.
Good for
Teams that want a Figma-style UI design tool without vendor lock-in, need to keep design data on their own servers, or want design output that maps closely to CSS.
Watch out for
The free cloud Professional plan caps storage at 10GB and team size at 8 members, with 7 days of version history; longer history, more storage and SSO come with paid tiers. Self-hosting means running and maintaining the server yourself.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 the pricing page lists cloud plans: Professional $0, Unlimited $7 per editor/month (capped at $175/month), Enterprise $25 per member/month, and a Private Server option at $50k/year. 14-day trials apply to paid tiers; discounts for non-profits, education and open-source projects.
