About Shotcut
Shotcut is an open-source video editor for Windows, Mac and Linux, developed by Meltytech and led by Dan Dennedy, co-founder of the MLT multimedia framework it is built on. Thanks to FFmpeg it supports hundreds of audio and video formats with no import step, so clips are edited natively and a timeline can mix formats, resolutions and frame rates. It offers frame-accurate seeking, screen, webcam and audio capture, Blackmagic Design SDI and HDMI input and preview, resolutions up to 4K, a dockable panel interface, filters and keyframes, and keyboard-driven editing (J, K, L, I and O keys). New versions are released about every two months and are numbered by date.
Good for
Hobbyists and creators who want a free editor on any desktop OS that opens almost any file without conversion, and Linux users who need a dependable timeline editor.
Watch out for
The interface is built from many dockable panels, which can feel unfamiliar. Advanced colour grading, motion graphics and collaboration are limited compared with commercial suites.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 Shotcut is free, released under the GPLv3; the FAQ confirms it can be used commercially.
