About Stable Diffusion (Stability AI)

Stability AI publishes the Stable Diffusion family, currently Stable Diffusion 3.5 in Large, Large Turbo and Medium sizes, plus SDXL and services such as Stable Image Ultra and Core. The API also covers upscaling, inpainting, outpainting, object erase, background removal and relighting, search-and-replace, sketch and structure control, style transfer, and image-to-3D. Models can be self-hosted under the Stability AI Community License, called via the API, or used through cloud partners. The company also sells Brand Studio, a managed production platform for enterprise teams.

Good for

Developers and studios that want downloadable image weights to run locally or fine-tune, or a pay-per-call API for generation and common editing operations.

Watch out for

The Community License is free only for individuals and organisations under $1M in annual revenue; larger businesses need an Enterprise license. The license is Stability's own, not an OSI open-source license. The company's own homepage now emphasises audio and enterprise work.

Pricing notes

As of October 2026 the API pricing page uses credits at $0.01 each, with 25 free credits to start; for example SD 3.5 Large is 6.5 credits per image, Stable Image Ultra 8, and the Creative Upscaler 60. Self-hosting is free under the Community License below $1M revenue.
