About The Unarchiver
The Unarchiver is a free macOS app for extracting archives, published by MacPaw. It opens Zip (including AES encryption and Zip64), Zipx, RAR (including encrypted and multi-volume), 7z, Tar, Gzip, Bzip2, XZ, CAB, MSI, NSIS and many self-extracting EXE files, plus disc images such as ISO, BIN and NRG. It also supports many legacy and niche formats, including StuffIt, DiskDoubler, Compact Pro, ARJ, LZH and Amiga disk images, and handles file names in non-Latin character sets. It installs in a few clicks and can be set as the default app for archive files. It requires macOS 10.13 or later; a command-line tool exists for other operating systems.
Good for
Mac users who receive RAR, 7z or old Mac archive formats that macOS's built-in Archive Utility does not open.
Watch out for
It is for extracting only; it does not create archives. The newsletter sign-up on the site is for MacPaw marketing.
Pricing notes
As of October 2026 the site says The Unarchiver is free with no in-app purchases.
